MSM

One of the most common supplements for those with joint conditions, MSM is a compound that helps to strengthen the collagen in the body.

Doctors particularly recommend MSM, sometimes in conjunction with glutamine, to treat those who have arthritis, as it is safer than taking DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), which is also commonly used to treat this condition. MSM will also not cause bad breath or body odour as DMSO does, so this makes it more desirable to many individuals.

The best food sources to get this nutrient include meat, seafood, milk, fruits and vegetables. While there is no standard recommendations of how much you must get to maintain good health, a good dose to aim for is 250 mg to 2250 mg per day depending on what you are using it for (arthritis patients for example will tend to go with the higher recommended dosage). If you are unable to get this amount from the foods you typically eat on a daily basis, you can most certainly look into taking supplemental form as well.

Other reasons for using this supplement include the prevention of interstitial cystitis, snoring, cancer prevention, scleroderma, excess stomach acid issues and allergies. The only individuals who should potentially stay away from taking it include women who are pregnant or nursing or those with liver and kidney diseases. Not a lot of research has been done on how it will affect these people so it is best to error on the side of caution.
