Grapefruit diet

Dating from 1930s Hollywood, the Grapefruit Diet is an extremely low calorie diet meal plan that restricts intake to a mere 800 calories per day.

Often erroneously linked with the Mayo Clinic, many professionals consider it to be unbalanced and possibly dangerous.

However, recent research by Dr. Fujioka at the Scripps Clinic found that over 12 weeks, participants who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost 3.6 pounds and those who drank a serving of grapefruit juice three times a day lost 3.3 pounds - indeed, many participants in the study lost more than 10 pounds.

Verdict : Grapefruit diet

An ultra low calorie diet meal plan such as this can have serious health implications, and is not a recommended way to lose weight.

However, as Dr. Fujioka's research suggest, regularly eating grapefruit as part of a healthy diet can help you to lose weight.
